Tammy Faye Bakker Messner

It’s a little weird to think that the wacky and over make-up’d Tammy Faye Bakker is dead.  Don’t misunderstand me I have no real associations with her other than being some curiosity in the background of popular culture, she seemed nice enough but she was not never relevant to my life.

I was a wee kid when she and her then husband Jim Bakker scandalized themselves and their P.T.L network.  I only really came to know who she was when she appeared on the horrible reality TV show the “Surreal Life”, in which she seemed like a nice fairly open minded lady, albeit a little weird.  I also remember her and Jim Bakker from a documentary on the defunct PTL and their amusement park which focused on its place in the revival of Christian evangelicalism in the US.

But still for the passed decade Tammy Faye Bakker Messner

(geeze did she ever get rid of a last name?) has been a punching bag for comedians.

So I wonder what will her legacy be, will it the PTL scandal?

The wackiness of her personal appearance and attitude?  Or will she simply be remembered a nice religious lady who had some troubles?

Roanoke Stuff

I’ve put my most popular Roanoke related articles on their own web site, I did this quickly to put them out there because on this blog (which is newer) they aren’t up  because they are from my old blog of the same name.

New iPods Looming?

Since last week’s iPhone release there has been a trinkle of rumors and speculation as to what the new iPods will be like and when they might be unleashed.  Following some comments made by Steve Jobs last Friday at a company-wide peptalk the new iPods are going to have an OS X operating system, rather than the traditional system used on current iPods (which interestingly was not developed by Apple).    This makes one think that Apple will use the same technology as it used in the iPhone, meaning the new iPods might very well be without buttons, with its classic clickwheel.  Think of an iPhone with perhaps more refined music and video controls and you very well might have the next generation of iPods.  They say these things might begin being released in November, in time for the holiday season. I can’t wait to see what happens. :)

Ukrops

I don’t know how many grocery stores a single valley of just under 100,000 people can sustain, but apparently it’s quiet a few.  This passed week Ukrops opened its first store in SW VA, a palatial store that also includes a cafe and a starbucks (or are they one in the same, I dunno as I didn’t really go over to that bit of the store). For those of you not in the know Ukrops is an uppercrusty grocery store chain based outta Richmond.  Their whole deal is good service plus quality perpared foods, meats, cheeses, well you the get idea.  In addition to their specialized fare they have more the more mundane items you’d find in any grocery store, like Cherrios.I wish I could say I loved Ukrops, that my end user experience was orgasmic an unlike anything else.  But I didn’t so I can’t so I won’t.  I found Ukrops to be tremendously overhyped, their service was not stellar as they claim it to be, their prepared foods once taken home and reheated still had that preparedness about them (I don’t know how to put it, you just know its not homemade).  Their prices on the everyday items also caused pause because while they weren’t hugely high they were high enough to cause someone to go to any number of nearby Krogers to pay a little less (yes folks, for once Kroger isn’t the most overpriced grocery store). So sad, so much promise, only to flicker out in the light of a confusing parking lot.
