iWant: The Rise of Apple and Thoughts on the iPhone

(note: in the title i wanted it to read iWant and iPhone but WordPress wouldn’t let that happen)

In a world long dominated by the Microsoft Windows Monopoly Apple has been both quietly and not so quietly making itself felt in the personal electronics space.  Apple and Microsoft are two completely different companies both culturally and in terms of business models. Unlike Microsoft, Apple believes in creating closed system/end to end products, which are products entirely produced (both hardware and software) by a single company and that often works with only “approved” components. This differs significantly from Microsoft, which favors licensing its software for use on various capable computers and components. This business model is probably the key point that has allowed Microsoft and its Windows products to so dominate the computing world for the passed few decades. Any company can purchase Windows products to preinstall on computers that meet at least minimum operational standards.

To further differentiate the two are their key goals, Apple seeks to create products that not only function but that also establish, further, and contribute to a lifestyle. It could be argued that Microsoft often overlooks or underestimates this cultural aspect of technology, that it seeks to make things technically well but products that are not necessarily stylish or user friendly.

In the late 1990s while Microsoft was focusing on maintaining XP, developing Vista, and trying to gain a foothold in various markets with the Media Center PC and XBOX, Apple was quietly rebranding itself. In 1998, two years after Steve Jobs returned to Apple, the new iMacs were introduced along with a slick and stylish marketing campaign, such campaigns have since become the norm for Apple. With the iMac Apple saw how to blend style with substance both in the actual hardware and software but also how to market it and make the item a must have.

In 2001 came Apple’s watershed moment with introduction of the iPod, which has helped create and expand the personal media player category of electronics. The iPod was not only a financial success for the iPod, bringing much needed cash to the then struggling company, but also redefined what Apple was. Apple no longer just made “that other computer” anymore, Apple produced items that contribute to a lifestyle and not only aid that lifestyle. All items since the iPod have followed a similiar physical look, clean and modern, and attempted to maintain the software easy of use/simplicity that is established in the iPod. The iPod is possibly the first electronic device to truly be used by some as a fashion statement as much as for its purpose.

With all of its stylistic sensibilities and “easy to use” closed system, Apple still has its problems. The company has had battery problems with several of its products, including the iPod, as well as problems with computers running too hot. The closed system is also not perfect because once you are in it you can’t easily get out it because all of your data is tied up within the ecosystem. Granted once Macs attain more market share and software manufacturers write more for Apple this issue will be less. But if all of your data is tied up in Apple DRM from iTunes and everything else is optimized for Apple formats and/or programs the harder it would be to move data and work concurrently with Macs and PCs. Compare this to Microsoft which just makes the software and lets hardware makers take care of the rest, this obvious allows for a more fluid system with less centralized control, although MS is trying to get more and more control with each product and OS it releases.

Back to Apple, in a few days on Friday Apple is set to release the iPhone. This product is very possibly the more hyped and anticipate piece of electronics since the release of Windows ‘95. The iPhone, to put it simply, is porn. It appeals first to our most base wants: the want to have something new, the want to have the best (and thus be the best?), the want to be seen as cool, as sexy. It’s silver sides and smooth glass face just looking at the iPhone makes you want to touch it in all the wrong places. Then you see the demos of the icons flying away, coming back, menus gliding up, its all so elegant, so perfect. And THAT is what Apple’s marketing is perfect at, making something seem so easy, so beautiful that you can almost talk yourself into buying it out of sheer utility. Of course there is little utility, few people absolutely need an iPod/Web client/Phone, but many people want it. It’s a weird thing that happens with something like this.  Of course I suggest waiting for the second generation iPhone before buying one as Apple products tend to have initial kinks. Although from the reviews I’ve read the product appears to deliver on the majority of its claims.

What remains to be seen is how much of a “game changer” the iPhone turns out to be.  Will it revolutionize the phone industry just as the iPod did for the portal media player industry.  I don’t know but in the passed decade I’ve learned its best not to bet against Apple.

As Promised

Last weekend I had hinted at a slight change in the blog. Well here it is, above under the title are three brand new pages. Each elaborates upon the three mission statements of the blog (Life. Technology. Politics.) and offers up subject specific link lists, which will grow in time. I did this because the blogroll at the bottom of the screen is small and could crowd easily, so that is now reserved only for local/regional blogs of SW Va, a place just for my contemporaries.

As I had said, its not a big change, but it’s just a little something. Enjoy. Or not. Whatever :).

What Made Paris Hilton?

A single question has been boggling my mind: Why is Paris Hilton famous? Go on, think about it (warning this may hurt).

Seriously, why is famous? Think back, before her crappy TV show, long before her even worse movie, what made her famous. Was it her sitting down one day with an agent and coming up with a plan to create a “dumb, rich, blonde sexbomb” persona and use it to make money through various means. Or did some photographer once take a picture of her, think it looked good (”that’s hot”) and put it in a magazine or something and thus a star was born. Or at least a rich kinda slutty celebrity.

It hurts my head….why is Paris Hilton famous?

Apple’s Safari for Windows

I’ve been using Safari 3’s public beta for the passed four hours or so of internet time and I’ve gotta say I’m impressed. This is hard for me to say, I wanted to hate the browser because honestly folks I have a problem with Apple due to their iPod products (typical techie dislikes). So I wanted soooo much to write this new product off as simply an overstylized piece of crap…but I can’t, so i won’t.

Instead I’ll tell you my first impressions: on most pages the browser is very fast, much faster than IE and Firefox and on some pages faster than Opera. It has very nice way of displaying bookmarks, kind of like information is displayed within iTunes. Safari has a very clean and open interface, not too much clutter and the tabs are very streamlined and don’t get bulky and in the way.

I haven’t utilized all the features yet and I am keeping in mind that this is a beta product. So far the only issue I’ve had is that some flash based interactive objects on a web page were static and I wasn’t able to interact with them. Although I am confident that is just a beta bug.

Overall I am shocked and how much I have liked using the Safari browser thus far. These are just first impressions tho, so things could change.

Apple’s Safari Ventures into the Windows Jungle

Today Apple announced that they would be making their Safari browser available for the Windows OS.  This is the first time the browser would be available to non-Mac users.

As with everything it produces, Apple claims that Safari is the best browser out there, posting comparative stats on the Safari 3 site.  Right now there is a public beta available, I’ll put up a review of sorts as soon as I can get into the program for a night or so.

Netscape Navigator 9 :: An Old Friend Is Back

The other day I was doing whatever it is I do online and for some reason I landed at the Netscape portal. Remember Netscape? Early internet company that helped pioneer the browser and define what an internet portal was. Well, after Microsoft nearly destroyed the company in the 1990s the company persisted, was eventually purchased by AOL, was reinvented as a social networking news portal and through all of this has continued to produce the Netscape browser.

Well just seeing the teal color scheme and little N with that swoopy thing made me nostalgic, reminded me of a vivid memory I have of my logging into a computer at my middle school library on a computer that utilized Netscape internet and the browser. Reminded me of how magical the internet back then seemed, it wasn’t a tool back then, it was something special, something amazing.

Which brings me here, to the latest edition of the Netscape browser which has once again been rebranded as the Netscape Navigator 9. That’s right guys, Netscape has returned the browser to the original name (Navigator) which had since been rebranded as simply Navigator and then as the Netscape Browser. Right now the browser is a standalone application, they will release a browser suite later on which will include an email client (just like the Netscape suites before it).

Netscape Navigator is based on the popular mozilla browser, in other words it has the same bones as Firefox and any extension except skins that are made for FF 2 can be used in the new Netscape Navigator 9.

The new features in NN 9 are:

  • Visual Refresh
  • URL correction
  • News Menu and Sidebar
  • Link Pad, News Tracker
  • In-Browser Voting
  • FF Extension Compatibility
  • Sidebar Mini Browser
  • Restart Netscape without losing your tabs
  • Resizeable Text Area
  • Tab History (history follows tabs opened from links within other tabs)
  • OPML Support
  • Throbber (the N that takes you to Netscape.com)
  • Combined Stop/Reload button
  • Friends’ Activity Bar
  • Netscape.com Sitemail Notification

Not surprisingly the browser integrates with the Netscape Portal, allowing for in-browser sharing and voting as well as the abilities to track friends’ activity on the portal and the headlines on the portal.

I’ve been using Netscape Navigator 9 as an IE7 replacement with no problems whatsoever, in my daily usage I find it to be a lot faster than IE7 and somewhat faster than FireFox 2. If you like FireFox but want something a little different with a little bit more out of the box, try to Netscape Navigator 9. Go on, try it.

Me Likie Art

Allright so I’ve been surfing the web looking at various artist’s websites and finding new ones.  So I stumbled upon the art of an L.A. artist by the name of Luke Chueh, ahhhh I love his stuff.

His art is both dark and cuddly, he paints bears, monkey’s, and rabbits in sometimes violent and often disturbing scenes.  These paintings are executed perfectly, from their typically basic color palettes to their inspired and sometimes haunting images.  It’s like pop art meets street art, it is beautiful.

P.S.-Despite the animals being used as subject matter, these paintings are sooooo not for the kiddies.

Shhhhh…………..

I’ve been quiet for the passed few days, but there’s a reason for that.  I’ve been working under the hood of the blog, trying to make it a little bit more interesting for the end user (you).

Don’t expect wonders, just something a little extra.

Fireflies

I saw Fireflies tonight, the first that I’ve seen them this season.

I love Fireflies, possibly the most magical aspect of the summertime is when the Fireflies come out and light up the twilight and night.  I love it!
